Founded in 2009; Quandary Productions is the brainchild of independent filmmaker Michael Henry. The Quandary Productions team strive to make web series, as well as short and feature films of a professional quality, on the slimmest of budgets. As well as making their own films, Quandary Productions also encourage aspiring filmmakers and artists to push forward with their own work; offering hands-on support, free promotion through social media networks, and encouraging further promotion of projects through various competitions and incentives. We believe that there is nothing stopping you from doing what you love, only yourself. Just get out there and do it! It has never been easier to make a film. The way we see it, aspiring filmmakers are squandering a great opportunity by not even trying, as it’s possible for anyone to make a film these days (we are proof!). Digital capture devices are available for a reasonable price. You can buy a good quality DSLR camera, which provide cinema-quality images, at around £400, or a DSLR, with lenses, a tripod, lights, dolly tracks AND audio recording equipment (all you need), for under £1000. There’s no reason people can’t get their hands on equipment and shoot something (it’s cheaper than buying a car!). Sure it takes a while to get used to some of the basics, but with digital you can simply delete what you don’t need – something you couldn’t do with film. Also, with the digital revolution, we’ve been blessed with the greatest device yet to advertise and distribute. Anyone can access what you have created at the click of a button.

Our plan from the start of university (eight years ago) was to join a course where equipment was available, people were like-minded, and units allowed us to build on the skills we had self-taught previously. We looked at the three year course and set ourselves the goal of writing a feature script over that time frame, with the mind-set to film after graduation. And we did. As time passed, the goal changed from seeing if we could make a feature film for less than £1000, to how well we could make one. With ‘NARCISSIST’ we felt confident that we did the best we could with as little money as possible, and the goal changed further. We now teach film to 16-21 year olds, advise and support aspiring actors and filmmakers globally, as well as having built a troupe of actors, like the German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who we work with time and again, just like members of the crew, who come back again and again to work on projects they feel passionately about. With this team of collaborators, who are as dedicated and enthusiastic as one another, we hope to continue to be self-sufficient, taking money from DVD / On Demand sales and other services, to put towards future films, further improving our equipment, and helping others (we aim to offer film grants to new talent in the coming years). We have also given ourselves another incentive to continue doing what we love – 10% of annual profits go to various charities.

With regards to the types of films we make, our promise is to work on projects which don’t treat you, the audience, like idiots, which push for natural performances, interesting characters, focusing on original concepts, which in our own unique way, say something about the human condition. We shoot using the latest available technology, to create affordable but professional films, with the hope of reaching as many people as possible.

Since creating Quandary, we have continued to make the films we want with people we love to work with, have helped countless other filmmakers, and hope to continue doing so for the rest of our lives. It had been our dream for a long time to be able to do what we do now, so we will continue to create short and feature films by any means necessary. Our intention isn’t to move to Hollywood and get a big mansion and make heaps of money, at the expense of creating what we really want, it’s to use what would be considered limitations to our advantage, be creative, and make good quality productions, whilst helping as many people as possible. Even if just one of our films connects with a person, that’s enough.
