Elsbeth Franjee is a documentary film maker and researcher from the Netherlands. Originally producing and co-directing musicals, Elsbeth has been a part of the creative industry for nearly ten years, and has since gone on to both research and direct various short human-interest stories, as well as setting up labs for teams of Dutch designers, and new media artists, to collaborate on their ideas and share inspiration.
Her work as director of ‘Suburban God’ is what drew our attention to Elsbeth. Suburban God (2012) is a 25 minute narrative filmed in the modern suburb of Amsterdam ‘Ijburg’, about a vicar who goes door to do with residents, hoping to discover what faith means to them. Regardless of the viewers religious stance, Elsbeth paints a wonderfully diverse portrait of the residents of Ijburg, and their ideas about the meaning of life in modern society. We highly recommend checking out her exquisite work, and if you like it, let her know.
It’s great to see examples of strong human-interest stories, and an increased interest in documentary as a whole. Hopefully we’ll see more directors like Elsbeth who shine the light on the art of factual storytelling. It is our hope that by promoting works such as these by Elsbeth will encourage future generations to create their own content.
